We live in a time of almost unlimited choice.
Thousands of jewelry pieces are available online at any given moment. Galleries travel to international fairs. Designers present new collections every season. Social media gives us access to artists and brands from every corner of the world.
And yet, finding something genuinely different has become surprisingly difficult.
During visits to contemporary art and jewelry fairs, I often notice a curious phenomenon. Different galleries, sometimes from different countries, present work that feels remarkably familiar. Similar materials. Similar forms. Similar proportions. Similar ideas of what contemporary jewelry should look like.
The quality may be exceptional. The craftsmanship may be excellent.
But originality is something else.
Originality involves risk.
It asks us to look at something we have not seen before and resist the immediate need to compare it with what we already know.
The safe choice and the unexpected one
Galleries play an important role in shaping the world of contemporary jewelry. They introduce artists to collectors, create context around their work and help people discover pieces they might never have encountered on their own.
At the same time, every gallery knows its audience.
Over time, a recognisable aesthetic naturally develops. Certain types of work sell more easily. Collectors become familiar with particular materials and visual languages. And naturally, the works that feel safest and most immediately understandable often become easier to present.
There is nothing wrong with this.
But it raises an interesting question:
How can someone fall in love with something they have never been given the opportunity to see?
A truly unusual piece cannot find its person while remaining invisible.
And perhaps this is the real challenge for distinctive jewelry today.
Not whether it will be loved by everyone.
But whether the right person will ever encounter it.
Not everything meaningful is made for everyone
I have always believed that O’Gem is not for everyone.
And I consider that one of its strengths.
My work is intentionally individual. Every piece is created around a particular natural mineral and formed by hand. No molds. No identical reproductions. No attempt to make one object appeal to the widest possible audience.
The result is jewelry with a strong personality.
Sometimes people fall in love with it immediately.
Sometimes they do not understand it at all.
Both reactions are perfectly natural.

What I learned from my physical store
When I had my physical O’Gem store in Amsterdam, I experienced something that has stayed with me.
People would walk in simply because they noticed the jewelry.
Again and again, visitors would stop, look closely and say almost the same thing in different words:
“You don’t see things like this very often.”
Some people were not looking for jewelry at all. They had no intention of buying anything when they entered the store.
But they were looking for something different.
Something that did not resemble what they had already seen everywhere else.
Many of them described the O’Gem pieces as unusual, individual and impossible to confuse with another brand.
That experience taught me something important.
There are people who are actively searching for originality.
The difficulty is that they cannot choose what they cannot find.
The collector who is waiting for the unexpected
Perhaps the role of a gallery today is not only to confirm what its audience already likes.
Perhaps it is also to introduce something unexpected.
To create the moment when a collector stops and thinks:
“I have never seen anything like this before.”
That moment is valuable.
It is the beginning of discovery.
Some of the most meaningful objects in our lives are not the ones we immediately recognise. They are the ones that gradually reveal themselves to us — or the ones we encounter unexpectedly and cannot forget.
This is particularly true for art jewelry.
